And once again, I sit, stare at the little screen and wonder what to say about the New Year…according to the currently accepted calendar.
1. yes, currently accepted – the Gregorian calendar that presently rules our lives is a creation by a Middle Ages pope to remind people when to pay their taxes. Interesting notion.
2. Heathens, such as myself, have never really had much of a celebratory feel around January 1st. How can anything possibly be “new” in the depths of a Canadian winter?? To my brain, it would make more sense to celebrate at the Spring Equinox. Life is starting to wake up…the grass is going to be green soon…that just makes more sense.
My annoyance with modern life aside, what do I wish to bring along from 2025? Not a whole helluva lot, really. 2025 felt like a very heavy year. Anyone acquainted with me in the physical world of small town Saskatchewan knows that I lost a very important battle. Not a battle with a dread disease, or law in any form, but with agencies to which I pay money to protect and provide for me in times of strife and illness. In real time, I got to watch my savings vanish, my debt load rise to unmanageable levels, and despite my repeated appeals to both benefit provider and labour union, was forced back to the cubicle out of financial desperation. Although the issues that took me out of the workforce continue (an interesting assortment of inconveniences) the banks don’t give two flying f*cks about such things. Mortgages still need to be paid every month, and my shop still needs funding to help it grow. Yes, I know, I made the choices…essays for another time.
Numerology tells us that 2025 was a “9” year. A year of endings and closings. A time to tie up loose ends. Chinese astrology held 2025 as a “snake” year. A year of shedding and growing.
2026 is a “fire horse” year according to China. According to the numbers it’s a “1”. So, what does all this mean?
One is a beginning. There is potential in this. Take the first step. Do the thing for the first time. Put first that which is most important to you. Be it financial, health care, expanding your consciousness…it doesn’t matter what IT is, just do it.
Advice from the google-gods for a Fire Horse year…bold energy, swift change and heightened ambitions. This leans into the firsts. Take first steps to a new path – creative, career, personal growth. There is caution in this message as well. This energy can stir volatility, impulsiveness, emotional intensity or abrupt shifts.
So, here’s my wonderfully generalized nut-shell version. Do something new, just don’t be an idiot about it.
Got a bad back? Bungee jumping for the first time is probably not real smart. Never done yoga? Likely the wiser choice. Always wanted to learn a new skill…start small. Craft up some pickles or learn to grow your own herbs.
2026 is a time to balance, be mindful, be calm and to begin. Be still and let the universe show you where to start.
May this year bring you all the firsts.
Peace to you and to this Earth.
